Release Blitz: AN ETIQUETTE GUIDE TO THE END TIMES BY MAIA SEPP + $10 Gift Card Giveaway

Women's Fiction / Dystopian
Date Published: June 6, 2014

Good manners never go out of style…do they?

There aren’t any zombies (yet), but the world is still at the brink of destruction: It’s 2028 and global warming has led to rising oceans, crazy weather, and resource scarcity. On top of that, someone just turned the Internet off. Seeing as how it’s humanity’s last chance to turn things around manners are, understandably, a bit frayed.

Etiquette buff Olive O’Malley is busy microfarming her urban property and minding her own business (and her chickens) when the government comes calling. Their goal is to push the populace towards carbon-neutrality while keeping kvetching to a minimum, and they come with a proposal: transition Olive’s popular etiquette column to a radio show for the masses, and they’ll help Olive find her grandfather, who’s gone missing.

Olive doesn’t trust the hipster government officials who try to bribe her with delicious-but-probably-a-little-evil chocolate pastries, and declines their offer. (Politely, of course.) But they won't take no for an answer, and soon Olive is knee-deep in turmoil, eco-terrorism, and missing chickens. Now she has to untangle herself from their demands and figure out how to make sure her family (and her poultry) are safe before it’s too late.

EXCERPT

My superhero power is definitely not sleeping. When I was looking for a house, my realtor rhapsodized about this bedroom’s perfect southern exposure, about the tastefully herbaceous wall treatment and charming old-world feel. Right now my room could be more accurately described as a floral-wallpapered sauna, full of an impossible heat, like three Julys stuffed into one. It isn’t helping.

I watch the overhead fan stop again, gyrate, and then restart before I roll over, the sheets coming with me. After a minute I shift to the other side, flinging the covers away with a sigh. The fan finally grinds to a halt, probably the victim of a wiring problem I haven’t been able to pin down, although lately I’ve been thinking it might just hate me.

I relocate to the living room and angle the pedestal fan my way. God, it’s hot. I close my eyes and lean back on the couch for a minute, hoping sleep will take me. The sofa is a faux leather hand-me-down that’s supple after years of wear, smelling faintly earthy, soft against my skin.

Eventually I switch the TV on. Our cable hasn’t worked properly in months, service so erratic it’s like the people running the company are legless</ i>, as my grandfather Fred would say–a charming Irish way of saying spectacularly drunk, even though my grandfather hasn’t seen Ireland since he was a child. My eyes land on Fred’s easy chair, a pale green monstrosity he could barely squeeze through the front door when I finally convinced him to move in with me. His pipe, his books, and his old-man slippers are still where he left them.
After flipping through a bunch of static, I shut the TV off and switch to the radio, which promptly announces it’s five-thirty in the morning. I ponder what to do next, discarding juggling, mind reading, and origami, although I spend more time thinking about mind reading than I probably should, considering I’m the only one here. Finally I pull my computer tablet onto my lap and turn it on. I write an etiquette column for a spunky arts and culture website, and my latest instalment is due on Friday; other people’s problems are always a delightful way to get my mind off my own. I start to page through the letters, which all start with Dear Olive. Dear Olive, I’m convinced my neighbour is milking my goat. Dear Olive, my neighbour’s windmill is keeping me up at night. Dear Olive, my wife is hoarding solar panels. What do I do?
Three crashing noises erupt above my head, each more ominous than the next. I wait for it to stop, but twenty minutes later I’m clinging to the side of my house, staring down a pair of raccoons who seem intent on defiling my solar array. For a long while it’s just the three of us, locked in visual combat, but it’s my roof and unless they start paying rent, they’ve got to go.  Eventually they get spooked by the noise of the six a.m. domestic surveillance drone overhead, which would make this the first time I’ve ever been happy to see a drone. I watch as it starts its first pass of the morning. They’re smaller than the military version–sleek, modern, ever-watchful. Rumour is they’re even biodegradable, although that hasn’t exactly endeared them to the population.
After the raccoons finally lumber off I pull myself onto the roof and take a look at the solar panel they’ve sullied, the wires connecting the array to my house almost stripped. It’s not easy to carry out rooftop repairs quietly at six in the morning, and it definitely wouldn’t be polite to wake anyone up, but I don’t want to be back up here tomorrow, either. If I leave the panel like this, they’ll come back and finish the job, I know it. They’re organized.
I look up when a newfangled Town Car, still boxy and authoritarian but now electric-powered, turns onto my street. I watch it as it goes; there are almost no cars on the roads these days, and the sight makes a faint sense of unease pulse through me. I hope whoever’s in that car isn’t carrying bad news for one of my neighbours.
After it eases past my house I try to concentrate on how to get myself off this roof. I’ve brought my very last roll of duct tape with me and after a moment of conflict, I wrestle a piece off and start to fix the panel, but my foot slips and my right hip ends up bouncing off the shingles. I pull myself into a sitting position to gather my wits, my stomach clenched into the size of a peanut, my breath suddenly ragged and shaky. I don’t want to go splat on the driveway beside my house. It’s a bungalow, true, and not that far to fall, but it’s still a worry.
Over my left shoulder the sunrise glows on the horizon, beautiful in a terrifying sort of way. It’s hard not to be nervous about what the sun will do to us today; so far the summer of 2028 has broken four temperature records, slow-cooking our city under our feet, making everything smell like asphalt and failure.

I'm delighted to be a part of the Escape for the Summer Book Tour and today I'm bringing you an excerpt from this fabulous read!

Can Andi Evans find the strength to start again?

Betrayed and broken-hearted, Andi's redundancy is one shock too many. Suddenly single and in debt, a summer working in the pretty Cornish town of Rock seems the perfect solution.Determined never to trust again, will a chance meeting with a stranger change her mind?

Andi's sister, Angel, is determined to find a man who can keep her in style. Heading to Rock, summer playground of the rich and famous, seems an inspired idea until a misunderstanding threatens to end a romance that has started to mean more to her than she ever expected...

Actress Gemma is no stranger to diets and disappointments. As the future of her career hangs in the balance, Gemma hopes a summer in Cornwall solves her problems. With a reality TV show being filmed in the seaside town surely she can avoid the pasty shops and win herself a role.

Arriving in idyllic Cornwall, all three girls are hoping for a holiday to remember. But will this be for the right reasons? Or, as emotions run higher than the tide, will the summer escape turn their lives upside down?

************************************************************

EXCERPT

Angel was having a lovely afternoon in Padstow. The pretty seaside town was teeming with summer visitors, all intent on making the most of the glorious sunshine while it lasted. Girls in skimpy vests and tiny shorts held hands with their sunburned boyfriends and drifted through the streets while yummy mummies pushed Bugaboo strollers to Rick Stein’s cafĂ© for afternoon tea. High above the higgledy-piggledy rooftops seagulls wheeled and shrieked in a cloudless blue sky before dive-bombing unsuspecting tourists for their ice creams and pasty crusts.

Angel treated herself to an ice cream, which she ate slowly while dangling her legs over the quayside. Across the shimmering sand and the water ribbon of the Camel Estuary, Rock was only a smudge on the horizon, but the place still made her stomach knot with excitement like the tangled fishing gear piled up alongside the trawlers. The sense of all the possibilities just there for the taking was overwhelming. Whatever was she doing just sitting around eating ice cream? There was so much to do.

Lobbing what was left of her cornet to the squabbling gulls, Angel continued to explore Padstow. It must have been at least ten years since she had last visited. Her mother had adored the town, much preferring Padstow to its more upmarket sister across the water, and had regularly taken both girls across by boat. Andi and Angel had loved exploring the gift shops, but most of all they’d been fascinated by the lobsters on sale at the wet fish shop.

The fish shop was still there but it, like the rest of the town, had undergone a transformation. Now it was Stein’s Fisheries; it was housed in a smart building of mellow timber and steel next door to Rick Stein’s Fish & Chips shop. Roughly opposite was another structure that seemed more in keeping with the South Bank than the South West: the National Lobster Hatchery. To be honest the only lobsters Angel was interested in were the kind served in Rick Stein’s exclusive restaurant and accompanied by gallons of champagne. The tricky bit was finding a way to get herself into the restaurant in order to sample all these treats. Figuring it was time to crank her social media profile up a gear, she opened the Twitter app on her phone and typed:

in Padstow can’t wait for dinner #Steins

Seconds later her tweet was safely logged in cyberspace and Angel’s work was done. It wasn’t strictly a fib. She was in Padstow, she was looking forward to her dinner and she was only a pebble’s throw away from the world-famous restaurant. If everyone wanted to read her tweet a certain way then that was hardly Angel’s fault. That was semantics!

The tide was right out by the time Angel reached the beach and the water taxi that was operating from the furthest jetty. Although it was late afternoon and shade was climbing over the hillside, the sand still basked in the light of the sun that had slipped from the narrow streets. Families with checked picnic rugs and gaudy windbreaks were sprinkled across the sand like hundreds and thousands, and shouts of excitement drifted from the water’s edge. Angel kicked off her sandals and strolled along the shore. The water was warm from the sun-baked sand and she sighed with pleasure. How many hours had she and Andi spent on this very beach? Hundreds probably. They’d loved nothing more than spending an entire day by the water; they’d always returned home to Ocean View salty and sandy and heavy with that almost drugged exhaustion that came from spending hours in the fresh air. Yes, they’d been regular beach babies back then. What a shame it had all had to end so abruptly...

I'm delighted to be a part of Neverland Book Tours for Sarah J. Pepper's sassy new adult novel  Locks: Rapunzel Unhinged ----- and today I am thrilled to be revealing the stunning
cover!

LOCKS
RAPUNZEL UNHINGED
BY
SARAH J. PEPPER

Blurb: Gunned down by the hottest killer in the history of the Badass Archives wasn’t exactly Rapunzel’s endgame. But when her reputable extraction skills fail, she uses unorthodox methods to gain her freedom from the Mercenary, whose icy blue eyes have serious pantydropping capabilities. Even though most girls wouldn’t fall for their would be assassin, Rapunzel isn’t like most dames. Her major girl boner for the Mercenary is so pathetically intense it verges on clichĂ©.

Regardless, Rapunzel’s hands are tied. Love chooses its victims, not the other way around. She isn’t the stereotypical Damsel in Distress. Her Bad Boy Prince Charming is a renowned mercenary, and her “Happy Ending” plays out like a bad movie. However, she is determined to find her freedom—love be damned—and she’ll do it in a fabulous pair of heels.

Author Bio: I specialize in dark, paranormal romance – think “happy ever after” but with atwisted, dark chocolate center. Reallife romance isn't only filled with hugs, kisses, bunnies, and rainbows. True love can be more thoroughly described in times of darkness and tribulation. It’s in those harsh moments where you see what a person is truly capable of – both the good and bad.Sometimes princecharming isn't always on time, and the glass slipper is a little snug. However, it doesn't mean Charming is not Mr. Right, and who says every shoe is the perfect fit?

Book Review: MURDER ON A SUMMER'S DAY BY FRANCES BRODY

MURDER ON A SUMMER'S DAY
BY
FRANCES BRODY

Publisher --  Piatkus Books
Published  --  3 Oct 2013
Pages  --  397
Genre  --  Cozy Historical Mystery

Blurb:  When amateur sleuth detective Kate Shackleton receives a dawn telephone call from her cousin James, his news soon snaps Kate into wakefulness. The India Office seek her on-the-spot help in finding a Maharajah, last seen on the Bolton Abbey estate. He has with him a hugely valuable diamond. Investigative successes and good family connections put Kate in the highly trusted category. Perceived as 'establishment', Kate feels an outsider in her sympathies. One thing she is sure of: her own skills and insights. Qualities that she is sure will help her unravel the latest disappearance on that fateful summer's day ...

My Thoughts:  What a delight to be back in the company of First World War widow and amateur sleuth Kate Shackleton in this tale of murdered Maharajahs, a feisty fiance, a missing diamond and royal rivalries all in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

This is the 5th book in the series -- I've read and enjoyed the first two --  Dying in the Wool and A Medal for Murder.

Tasked with finding a missing Maharajah, Kate is the perfect person to question people without them realising they're being questioned, she draws people out, they trust her and she's very persistent.  She's an extremely likeable heroine and I enjoy the way she thinks things out carefully and deliberately.

A Maharajah

While out shooting the Maharajah had shot and killed a white doe, an act of sacrilege in this superstitious village and some people were not surprised when he was found dead, but who was the killer and why would anyone want him dead?

Frances Brody's delightful writing brings the era of the 1920's to life, the plot was entertaining with some twists and turns and suspects aplenty. I did not guess the killer's identity.

Even though I haven't read all the books in this series I still found it easy to follow Kate's progress and mentions are made throughout the book to Kate's situation so I think this could be read on its own.

Where to find Frances Brody:

There's an interesting article by Frances on Kate Shackleton's adventures here

The 6th book in the series -- Death of an Avid Reader is published in the UK on 2 October 2014.

A LIFE LESS ORDINARY BY VICTORIA BERNADINE Book Tour and $25 Giveaway

A LIFE LESS ORDINARY
BY
VICTORIA BERNADINE

Contemporary Romance/Chick Lit
Date Published: December 2012

For the last fifteen years, Rose “Manny” Mankowski has been a very good girl. She turned her back on her youthful fancies and focused on her career. But now, at the age of 45, she's questioning her choices and feeling more and more disconnected from her own life. When she's passed over for promotion and her much younger new boss implies Manny's life will never change, something snaps. In the blink of an eye, she's quit her job, sold her house and cashed in her pension, and she's leaving town on a six month road trip.

After placing a personal ad for a travelling companion, she's joined in her mid-life crisis by Zeke Powell, the cynical, satirical, most-read – and most controversial – blogger for the e-magazine, What Women Want. Zeke's true goal is to expose Manny's journey as a pitiful and desperate attempt to reclaim her lost youth – and increase his readership at the same time. Leaving it all behind for six months is just an added bonus.

Now, armed with a bagful of destinations, a fistful of maps, and an out-spoken imaginary friend named Harvey, Manny's on a quest to rediscover herself – and taking Zeke along for the ride.
**********************************************************************

EXCERPT

Manny laid in bed, staring up at the ceiling and waiting for sleep. She plucked restlessly atthe blanket and wished she could relax. Tomorrow was Steph’s first staff meeting. Today she’d reacquainted herself with everyone in the office then spent the rest of the day with Manny being briefed on the details of the work of the branch and any current issues she’d need to resolve within the next few days. That meant Manny’s own work had been delayed, and tomorrow it would be delayed again–and Manny would have to leave early in order to meet Rebecca and Daisy at the lounge for drinks before heading to the club.

Manny took a deep breath and slowly let it out. It wouldn’t be too bad, she staunchly told herself.

Steph was young, energetic, and had a shrewd intelligence almost obscured by the cleavage-revealing shirts, short skirts and a figure that could stop traffic–and probably did. Manny wondered if Craig truly understood what he’d gotten himself in for by promoting Steph rather than Manny.

Cleavage and legs.

She mentally rolled her eyes at Harvey’s dry, cynical tones.

Maybe–but that’s not really fair to him, is it? He’s not a bad guy.

But he is just a guy.

She does bring a new perspective–a new way of thinking about things. She’s not a bad choice–and I can’t argue with Craig’s idea that shaking things up could make things better.

And where does that leave you?

No worse off than I was before.

And no better.

If you’re not going to be helpful...

Harvey glanced down at his suddenly ruffled shirt opened to the middle of his muscled chest and skin-tight breeches. He glanced back at her with a ruefully amused smile.

Watched the Ice Pirates again, did you?

Oh, shut up–it’s a classic no matter what anybody else thinks!

I’m just sayin’–if I was real and regularly wore pants this tight, I’m not sure I’d be of any use to you. If you know what I mean.

Manny groaned and shook her head, and Harvey blinked out of existence. She wondered when she’d managed to lose control of a figment of her imagination–one she’d eventually felt compelled to name after an invisible rabbit.

She groaned again, rolled over and pulled the covers over her head. It was going to be another long day tomorrow.

Complete with dancing.

When Camels Fly by NLBHorton

Every publicist I interviewed to facilitate the launch of When Camels Fly was curious about the title, and development of the cover and back-cover copy. Bloggers (one being Carole) asked about these marketing elements, too. While answering their questions, I realized that the cover was doing its job really well if it triggered this much interest. I really appreciate Carole giving me the opportunity to share my observations about the cover with you.

Once upon a time…
When Camels Fly was a lowly file in my computer. It took six months to write, and longer than I’ll admit to reach “professional quality.” The working title (no, I won’t tell you) was a bit of a dud, and a tad academic. As my protagonist’s sense of humor began to shine through, I knew that the story deserved a new, more intriguing title.

That’s when the real trouble began.

My partner in crime in this endeavor, my daughter, and I beat on the title for months over pots of tea in my office. We were, in the lingo of Jeff Madison (my protagonist’s son), epic failures. It didn’t matter if we brought in Scottish shortbread cookies, or baked blueberry bread to encourage our little grey cells to work during these brainstorming sessions. We were stuck.

Silly me. We used the wrong libation.

She and I were sipping glasses of good French champagne when the title trauma resurfaced at the end of the Thanksgiving meal. After a flute, we didn’t care too much, and got a little silly. Then she, of the serious engineering degree, said something about flying camels. I, having consumed less champagne, said, “That’s it! When Camels Fly!” We giggled, and my eight-something (do specifics really matter in your eighth decade?) mother poured more all around. I worked the new title into the manuscript the next week.

All the world may be a stage, but not everybody’s an artist.
My background is in marketing and advertising, and I’ve been privileged to develop some beautiful campaigns. Many authors rely on self-publishing house to design a cover, or take a shot at it themselves using public-domain images, clip art, and Photoshop.

Because I knew the cover would trigger the first click or reach for work by an unknown author, I wanted a Big-Six-publishing-house-quality cover. That means I paid for it.

I lurked in bookstores, watching to see what people picked up. I wandered the stacks to determine what appealed to me. I asked questions of my book-club friends and beta readers (who range from eighteen to octogenarian). I did a LOT of online research about the genres that sell best, and how covers in those genres are designed. Then I put together a team that’s created more than one New York Times best-selling novel cover, and organized my thoughts to do the art direction I used to do for marketing campaigns.

The cover was easy and seamless, and my team is now working on the second cover in the series, for The Brothers’ Keepers, due out November 17th. (I should note that this title did NOT require champagne. However, the book club Readers Guide at the back of When Camels Fly did.)

The Elevator Pitch (or “Why I hate writing headlines”).
When I was a journalism student (when we set type by hand and dinosaurs roamed the earth), I hated writing headlines. How could I condense an article into four or five noteworthy words? Impossible!

About halfway through the writing of When Camels Fly, I signed up for a craftsman level fiction-writing practicum, a one-year adventure with some of the most talented people this side of Hemingway’s grave. And guess what? We had to develop something called the elevator pitch, which essentially meant that if I trapped a publishing executive in an elevator (it is not beneath me), how well could I sell my work between floors? Yep. It’s a verbal headline offering the gist of When Camels Fly in an intriguing fashion.

So I flexed my old ad-copy muscles, grabbed the elevator pitch, and tried to compose the most compelling, powerful back-cover copy since…well, since dinosaurs roamed the earth. I’ll end this guest blog with it, and thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts about my cover. I hope you join me in the adventures of archaeologist Grace Madison in When Camels Fly, and look forward to hearing from you.

Running for their lives, they pursue an evil prepared to sacrifice millions of people. Endangering family and friends, and confronting old loves, the mother-and-daughter team soon realizes nothing is as it seems. Even each other.
When all that’s left is right.
